Learn about the Flag Etiquette of the United States of America

When displayed horizontally or vertically against a wall, ensure that the union is uppermost and to the flag’s right, facing the observer’s left. Similarly, when displayed in a window, position the flag with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street.

No other flag or pennant should be placed above or to the right of the flag of the United States, except under specific circumstances such as church services at sea. The flag of the United Nations or any other national/international flag should not be displayed in a position superior to that of the US flag within the United States.

When flown on the same halyard with flags of states, cities, or localities, the flag of the United States should always be at its peak. If flown from adjacent staff, the US flag should be hoisted first and lowered last.

Here are some reminders regarding display scenarios for flags: 

• When displayed with another flag against a wall from crossed staffs, the US flag should be on the right. 
• In a group display of flags, the flag of the United States should be at the center and highest point. 
• When displaying flags of multiple nations, adhere to rules for separate staff and equal prominence.

• On a speaker’s platform, position the flag above and behind the speaker if displayed flat. 
• In a church or auditorium, place the US flag in a position of superior prominence on the right as the clergyman or speaker faces the audience.

• When flying the flag at half-staff, follow the proper procedure involving hoisting to the peak and lowering to half-staff. 
• On Memorial Day and in the event of the death of officials, observe the guidelines for displaying the flag at half-staff, as directed by the President or Governor of the State.
